Hercules #1400 Golden Cutter Series (1950-1955)
Only #1408, #1409, & #1414 sizes
Around 1950-1951 there were major changes to Sargent’s plane offerings. We no longer see anything larger than a Jack plane (#1414) or the #407 size. The Hercules and the “Golden Cutter planes (#1107, 1217 block planes along with the #1408, #1409, and #1414 #1414C) were produced for the home owner market. As noted the #400 series production has ceased.
Hercules Golden Cutter Features:
** The Boxes were labeled Golden Cutter, the planes were not marked as such
** Lever cap has “Sargent Hercules” cast in recess with gold colored background
** Plane base is painted green not japanned
** Iron is colored a golden color
** Hercules Stamped in the iron (see Hercules Logos)
** Two piece yoke
** Plane number not cast in the base
** Made in USA cast in base
** Semi round headed screws
** Round top frog
** Major recessed area in the frog
** Larger Steel Adjuster knob
** Adjuster nut is steel with brass plating (1 1/4”)
** Steel knob and tote nuts (1/2″ in diameter)
** Hardwood knob and tote (tall knob) Later models had plastic knobs and totes.
** Third lateral with bent type disc and folded finger end (to end of production)
