Large Auburn NY Woodworking Block Plane or Hand Plane, Antique Vintage Farmhouse decor.
Show some Hand Tool Woodworking history from Craftsman from days past. This is a typical hand plane used in the 1700-1800 and before.
It would be considered rustic or primitive decor. Perfect for the farmhouse, cabin or ranch look.
This particular plane is clearly stamped Auburn NY. Auburn Tool company was a large and prolific producer of wooden hand planes in the 19th century. They were in Auburn NY and were noted for using a lot of prison labor to produce their tools since there was a state prison located nearby.
This plane could actually be returned to service. It is in good enough condition, but not many woodworkers use this type of hand tools any more. That is why it is listed as decor. It’s in hope of preserving the history and interest in the crafts of earlier days. However the blade has some pitting, but would be easy to restore, sharpen and use. The plane itself is in excellent shape. All I have done is wiped it own with a BLO/Mineral oil mix and buffed on a coat of straight BLO (boiled linseed oil) which would have been the traditionally used preservative.
According to the Davistown museum website, The Auburn Tool company succeeded Casey, Clark & Co. with Casey as its president, then became the Ohio Tool Co. in 1893. Other names under which they produced included New York Tool Co., Owasco Tool Co., Genesee Tool Co., Ensenore and Star. Some of their products were produced using Auburn state prison labor. Of particular interest is a ‘Phelps Combination Plane,” a plane with a level vial and rule built in, possibly patented to a Frank Phelps of Auburn on 9 February 1892.
This plane is 26″ long with a 2 3/8″ blade (sometimes called the “iron”) which would make it a jointer plane.
