Birmingham Planes (“B” Planes) I tend to follow the planes that follow me home. This “B” Plane was just begging for a proper face lift, so after finding the cutter, chip breaker and cap I needed, I decided to give it an over haul.
Birmingham Plane Manufacturing Company (Birmingham CT) operated from 1885 to 1900. They made some cool designs that I hope finds me someday, but for now, we’ll focus on the “B” plane.
In 1891 Birmingham Plane Manufacturing Company was reincorporated as Derby Plane Manufacturing Company, but it is believed the planes were still labeled as Birmingham. Here is some more information.
In 1900 Union bought Derby and continued making the bench planes. Some Union marked planes can be found with the Mosher patented lateral
Birmingham B Plane Block (Similar to the Stanley #15, Like the #9 1/2 but longer) And Like the Birmingham #9 1/2 except for length.
